ASUP TASKS GOVT ON POLYTECHNIC FUNDING Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics
A.S.U.P, has enjoined the Federal and State govts to substantially fund
the Polytechnic education, describing it as the panacea for nation’s
technological advancement problems. The Union also called on the Federal Govt. to fully implement the
content and spirit of the agreement agreement it enters with the union in
September 2001, especially the implementation of HATISS in polytechnics
and also to harmonize the academic allowance of the lecturers. This is
contained In a communiqué issued
at the end of the 45th regular meeting of National Executive
Council NEC of the union in Lagos on June 1, and signed by the union’s national president mr. sylvester leko and national secretary mr. banjo
oguntose.the union further advises
the FG to ensure passage of the bill on national
commission for polytechnics and avert further disruption that trails
discussions about the bill in the national assembly. Other issues raised
in the NEC meeting include reduction of security agent and military men
around polytechnics premises, stamping out cultism most especially in
LASPOTECH and removal of the council chairman of the Kwara State
Polytechnic Professor Abdurahaman Oba PARENTS AND MANAGEMENT FORUM IN FUTO RECORDS SUCCESS The
Federal University of Technology, Owerri- FUTO sets up parent and
management forum which levies each student N5000. The V.C. of the
University Prof Jide Njoku who made this known at the forum organized by
correspondents’ chapel of the Nigerian Union of journalists (NUJ) points
out that the forum has completed and handed over to the University a big
project with the N5000 levy. The University is currently building 66 room
hostel and convocation square all from the levy, he added. FEDERAL

Danfodio University Sokoto on Wednesday June 23, Matriculated 2,801
students admitted out of over 16,000 applicants for the 2003/2004 session.
The V.C Prof Tijjani Bande gave the breakdown of the placement as;

.AS UI CUTS DOWN
INTAKES The
University of Ibadan has cut down the number of fresh intakes, the
Registrar of the institution Chief (Mrs.) Mojisola Ladipo has said. The
University admits 2,700 students this year as against 5000 in the last
five years. According to her, 4000 students were recently sent packing by
the University authorities while another batch will in the next few days
be flushed out. This development will also include PG schools, she hinted. NANS
THREATENS BATTLE WITH SERVICE PROVIDERS The
National Association Nigerian Students (NANS) has threatened to mobilise
its members to seal up the premises of GSM providers if the latter do not
improve their network. The National President of the association Mr. Tony

will have to appear decently dressed from the next academic session which
begins late this year. The institutions new V.C Prof. Shehu Abdullahi who
made this known in a statement on July 6,2004 said the dress code is
necessary to curb the rapidly increasing
cases of sexual abuses adding that the two major religions which
the population concerned
adhere to, proscribe a
minimum dress habit suitable for decent life. It is a world acclaim fact
that Nigerians are among the religious peoples on earth, so our University
will have to reflect that, he said. It
can be recalled that both UNIABUJA and UNIMAID have institutionalised such
dress code some time last year.
